CHILD LABOUR IN INDIA

Child Labour:
There are more than 12.67 million child laborers in India (Census 2001).
Most Indian street children work. a common job is rag-picking, in which boys and girls as young as 6 years old sift through garbage in order to collect recyclable material. The children usually rise before dawn and carry their heavy load in a large bag over their shoulder. Rag-pickers can be seen alongside pigs and dogs searching through trash heaps on their hands and knees.
Other common jobs are the collecting of firewood, tending to animals, street vending, dyeing, begging, prostitution and domestic labour.
Children that work are not only subject to the strains and hazards of their labour, but are also denied the education or training that could enable them to escape the poverty trap.

HEALTH OF STREET CHILDREN

Health:
Poor health is a chronic problem for street children. Half of all children in India are malnourished, but for street children the proportion is much higher. These children are not only underweight, but their growth has often been stunted; for example, it is very common to mistake a 12 year old for an 8 year old.
Street children live and work amidst trash, animals and open sewers. Not only are they exposed and susceptible to disease, they are also unlikely to be vaccinated or receive medical treatment. Only two in three Indian children have been vaccinated against TB, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio and Measles; only one in ten against Hepatitis B. Most street children have not been vaccinated at all. They usually can not afford, and do not trust, doctors or medicines. If they receive any treatment at all it will often be harmful, as with kids whose parents place scalding metal on their bellies as a remedy for persistent stomach pain.Child labourers suffer from exhaustion, injury, exposure to dangerous chemicals, plus muscle and bone afflictions.
There is much ignorance about reproductive health and many girls suffer needlessly. A girl made infertile by an easily-preventable condition may become unmarryable and so doomed to a life of even greater insecurity and material hardship.

AIDS IN INDIA AND IN ANDHRA PRADESH

Number of people affected by HIV/AIDS in India
Previous estimates & projections given up to July'07
The estimates projected until recently were that globally India is leading over South Africa in terms of the overall number of people living with HIV. The United Nations Report on HIV released on Tuesday the 30th of May'06 said the World's second most populous nation has overtaken South Africa as the country with the most people living with HIV virus. India is home to about 5.7 million cases as against about 5.5 million cases infected in South Africa.
NACO estimated that the number of Indians living with HIV increased by 500,000 in 2003 to 5.7 million. Around 38 percent of these people were women.
By the end of May 2005, the total number of AIDS cases reported in India was 109,349 of whom 31,982 were women. These data also indicated that 37% of reported AIDS cases were diagnosed among people under 30. Many more AIDS cases go unreported.
The UN Population Division projects that India's adult HIV prevalence will peak at 1.9% in 2019. The UN estimates there were 2.7 million AIDS deaths in India between 1980 and 2000. During 2000-15, the UN has projected 12.3 million AIDS deaths and 49.5 million deaths during 2015-50.
A 2002 report by the CIA's National Intelligence Council predicted 20 million to 25 million AIDS cases in India by 2010, more than any other country in the world.
HIV/AIDS orphans
Obtaining data on the number of children orphaned by AIDS is difficult. It is believed that the proportion of children in India orphaned by AIDS is far lower than in sub-Saharan Africa but because of India's huge population the actual number of children already orphaned by AIDS is very high. In 2001 the number of orphaned children was already estimated at 1.2 million.
Although children are not yet being orphaned by HIV/AIDS on a large scale in most cities, studies have shown that the problem of orphans in some urban slum areas of India is already severe.
HIV/AIDS in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh has one of the fastest increasing HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in India. In 2002 the ANC (Antenatal Clinics) prevalence rate was 1.25% and NACO estimated that more than 400,000 people were living with HIV in Andhra Pradesh, the second highest number after Maharashtra state. This is 10% of the total HIV cases in India and ninety percent of the infections in the state occur through sexual transmission. Andhra Pradesh is a Hindu state in the southeast of the country with a total population of 75.7 million. The following link gives you complete statistics of the rural and urban health issues in AP.
